Monday, October 6 Departure
Depart from Washington/Dulles Airport this afternoon,
changing planes at JFK International Airport for your transatlantic
flight.
Tuesday, October 7 Arrive Amman, Jordan
Arrive at Queen Alia Airport in Amman late in the morning.
Dinner and overnight at the Intercontinental Hotel in
Amman.
Wednesday, October 8 Madaba, Mount Nebo and The Baptism Site
Drive to Madaba
to see a 6th century
Mosaic Map of the Holy
Land as Christian
Pilgrims knew it. Continue
on to Mount Nebo
where Moses died and
from which he saw the
Promised Land. Drive
to Bethany-Beyondthe-
Jordan where John the Baptist preached and baptized
Jesus. Visit the site where Elijah the Prophet was taken
to Heaven in the Whirlwind. Arrive at the Dead Sea, the
lowest spot on earth, 1,300 ft. below sea level and where
it is impossible to sink in the water due to the salt content.
Dinner and overnight at our hotel.
Thursday, October 9 Petra – Aqaba
Leave early this morning to drive along the King’s
Highway to Petra. Hike, ride a camel, a horse or donkey
cart into the ancient Nabatean City of Petra, carved out of
the multi-colored sandstone mountains. See the 3,000 seat
Roman Theater, the Monastery, and the famous Treasury
Building. Leave Petra and drive south to Aqaba Moevenpick
Resort for the night.
Friday, October 10 Massada and Jerusalem
Cross into Israel and drive north through the desert
country of Arava and the Negev. Stop and ride the cable
car to the top of Massada; King Herod’s mountain bunker
and the last stronghold
of the Jewish revolt
against Rome (66-73
AD). Continue through
the Judean desert to
Qumran where you will
view Cave # 4, which
contained the greatest
quantity of Dead Sea
scrolls. At Jericho, visit the tel of this oldest city and view
the traditional mountain of Jesus’ temptation. End the day
on the top of the Mount of Olives and behold the majestic
City of Jerusalem. Dinner and overnight at the Pontifical
Institute of Notre Dame in Jerusalem.
Saturday, October 11 Jerusalem
Begin your day with Mass at the Pontifical Institute of
Notre Dame. After breakfast, we’ll visit the Old City of Jerusalem.
Our visit includes the Western Wall, the Dome of
the Rock and the Al-Aqsa
Mosque, St. Anne’s
Church, and the Pools
of Bethesda. From
there we continue to the
Judgment Hall, known
as the Antonia Fortress,
where Jesus was led
to be condemned to
death by Pontius Pilate.
Follow the Vía Dolorosa through the markets of the Old
City, praying at the Stations of the Cross. We reflect on the
greatness of His sacrifice, stopping at each of the fourteen
stations of the Cross until we reach the Church of the Holy
Sepulchre. There we will visit Calvary, the empty Tomb
of our Lord, and the different sections of the church. We
will have free time at the church for prayer and reflection
before going back to the hotel for dinner and overnight.
Sunday, October 12 Mount Of Olives
Attend Mass at the Church of the Holy Sepulcher.
Return to the Notre Dame for breakfast. After breakfast,
drive to the top of the Mt. of Olives for a panoramic view
of Jerusalem, a better
understanding of its
geography, and some of
the key sites surrounding
the area. Visit the
Church of Pater Noster
where Jesus taught his
disciples how to pray.
Proceed down the Palm
Sunday route to the Church of Dominus Flevit, where our
Lord wept over the city. We continue our walk on the Palm
Sunday route to the Garden of Gethsemane, where we
find the Rock of Agony, where Jesus prayed before his
betrayal. Before going back to the hotel, we will have free
time at the dimly-lit church for prayer and reflection.
This afternoon travel to Mount Zion to visit the Church
of the Dormition Abbey, and then the Cenacle, the place of
the Last Supper and Pentecost. Visit the Church of Saint
Peter In Gallicantu and the house of Caiphas, the high
priest of the Jews, where Jesus was imprisoned for the
night and where Peter denied our Lord. Return to our hotel
for dinner and overnight.
Monday, October 13 Bethlehem
After Mass at the
Church of the Holy
Sepulcher and breakfast,
drive to Bethlehem
to visit the place of
our Lord’s birth in the
Basilica of the Nativity.
See the Grotto of the
Nativity, the Church of
St. Catherine (where the Midnight Mass is celebrated), and
the Caves of St. Joseph and St. Jerome underneath the
church (Holy Mass in the Nativity Church). Visit the Shepherds’
Fields, where the Angels appeared to the shepherds
watching over their flocks during the night. In the afternoon
drive to the nearby village of Ein Karem to visit the birthplace
of St. John the Baptist and the Church of the Visitation
(where Mary came to visit her kinswoman Elizabeth
and proclaimed the ´Magnificat’). If time permits, we will
stop to visit the Holy Land Model, before returning to the
hotel for dinner and overnight.
Tuesday, October 14 Galilee and the Church of the Annunciation
This morning we
bid farewell to Jerusalem
and drive to Cana
of Galilee to visit the
Church commemorating
the place where Jesus
transformed water into
wine. Then we move
on to Nazareth to visit
the Basilica of Annunciation where we will celebrate Holy
Mass. We’ll also visit Mary´s Well and the Synagogue.
Next we head towards Mount Tabor, the Mount of the
Transfiguration, and visit the beautiful Basilica and the rock
under the altar where the Transfiguration took place. We
will spend some time on this peaceful mountain for meditation
and reflection. We then check into our hotel in Nazareth
for dinner and overnight.
Wednesday, October 15 Mt. of the Beatitudes and Capernaum
Today we drive to
the Sea of Galilee to
visit the Mt. of Beatitudes
where our Lord gave the
Sermon on the Mount
(Holy Mass). Continue
to Tabgha to see the
splendid mosaic of the
loaves and fishes with
which Jesus fed the Five
Thousand. Visit the Church of St. Peter’s Primacy and
then visit Capernaum to see the house of St. Peter and
the Synagogue where our Lord preached. One of today´s
highlights is a boat ride across the Sea of Galilee. We
finish our day with a visit to the Jordan River to renew our
Baptismal Vows and then we drive back to the hotel for
dinner and overnight.
Thursday, October 16 Galilee - Amman
After breakfast, we will bid farewell to Israel and drive
back to Jordan. On the way, we’ll stop at the ancient
Roman City of Jerash, which includes the Cardo Maximus,
the street lined by columns and flanked by temples,
churches, theaters and innumerable mosaics. From there,
we travel south to Amman for dinner and overnight.
Friday, October 17 Return To The U.S.
Depart Amman early in the afternoon, arriving at
Dulles Airport late this evening.
