About the Oberammergau Passion Play:

The Oberammergau Passion Play was first presented in 1634, fulfilling the vow to God by the residents of Oberammergau for delivering their suffering from the plague during the Thirty Years War.

In 2010 the residents of the Bavarian town of Oberammergau will once again show that their presentation of the Passion of Christ has retained its validity for 376 years. Once again the famous Oberammergau Passion Play will be turned into a unique cultural and religious event.

The tour price is based on estimated rates and fares for 2010 and is subject to change. All efforts have been made to offer realistic pricing.

*Single rooms for the two nights in Oberammergau are available on a limited basis and cannot be guaranteed. If a single room is not available, you may be required to share a room for these two nights or pay an additional supplement.

ITINERARY:
Day 1 (Tues., May 18)   Frankfurt, Germany

We leave from our nearby airport for an overnight flight to Frankfurt, Germany. Meals according to airline policy.

Day 2 (Wed., May 19)   Rothenburg

We have an early morning arrival at Frankfurt International Airport. Following custom formalities we drive to Rothenburg ob der Tauber, for a full day of independent shopping and sightseeing. Dinner is included later today. Tonight we will explore this beautiful town by foot on the Night Watchman’s Tour. Our overnight lodging is in Rothenburg. (D)

Day 3 (Thurs., May 20)   Heidelberg

Today we travel south to the old university town of Heidelberg. The oldest university town in Germany, Heidelberg has become the cultural center of influence. We will have a walking tour of this celebrated city. Our lodging in Heidelberg will be two nights. Dinner is included. (B, D)

Day 4, (Fri., May 21)   Heidelberg and Nekar River Cruise

Arriving in the village of Eberbach this morning, we visit the Bakery that is still owned by the Beissel family, descendants of Conrad Beissel, who founded the Cloister community in Ephrata, PA in 1732. Conrad Beissel, along with Alexander Mack, established the first Church of the Brethren in the “New World,” in Germantown, PA. Eberbach is also the German “sister city” to Ephrata. We later cruise on the Neckar River from Neckarsteinach to Heidelberg through the scenic Neckar Valley. Lodging will again be in Heidelberg. (B, D)

Day 5, (Sat., May 22)   Lucerne, Switzerland

Driving south from Heidelberg this morning, we enter Switzerland near Basel, along the Rhine River. We have a brief walking tour in Basel, followed by some free time for independent browsing Lucerne. The fame of Lucerne as a center for visitors is enhanced from year to year. The city has a remarkable site at the northwest end of Lake Lucerne, (Lake of the Four Cantons) where it joins the Reuss River. Our lodging for two nights will be in Lucerne. (B, D)

Day 6, (Sun., May 23)   Lucerne

After breakfast, we have a guided walking tour of this lovely city, including the old Chapel Bridge, the famous Lion Monument commemorating the courage of the Swiss Guards, and the narrow streets with the fascinating afternoon will allow us free time to browse and shop in the charming city of Lucerne. In the evening, we are treated to a dinner and folklore show. Lodging tonight will again be in Lucerne. (B, D)

Day 7, (Mon., May 24)   Liechtenstein & Oberammergau

Our scenic drive today will take us through the Swiss Alps region into the tiny Principality of Liechtenstein, located between Switzerland and Austria. We have some free time in Valduz, capital of Liechtenstein. Today we visit Neuschwanstein, the fairytale castle of the Bavarian King Ludwig, II. Our tour will include admission to the Castle. We will have many photo opportunities castle. stop at the Church of the Meadows before going on to Oberammergau, where we have lodging for two nights. (B, D)

Day 8, (Tues., May 25)   Oberammergau

The history of the Passion Play at Oberammergau goes back to 1634 when the quaint alpine village of Oberammergau was threatened by the deadly disease known as the Black Plague which scourged Europe, killing two-thirds of the population Germany. of Oberammergau vowed that if the village was spared, a re-enactment of the suffering and “passion” of Jesus Christ would be performed. The village was miraculously saved from the ravages of the Black Death. Since that date the play has been performed every ten years. We have a leisurely morning in Oberammergau. After lunch we take our seats in the theatre to attend the performance of the world-famous Passion Play. This play is performed by local villagers—often with roles handed down within families from generation to generation. Dinner is included during a 3-hour break in the late afternoon. The performance ends at 10:30 p.m. Our overnight lodging is in Oberammergau. (B, L, D)

Day 9, (Wed., May 26)   Herrenchiemsee Palace

We continue our scenic drive through the German State of Bavaria along Lake Kocheisee and Lake Walchensee to The Chiemsee, known as the “Bavarian Sea.” The Chiemsee is the largest side, gentle banks are bordered by rushes, on the other side, are the first foothills of the Bavarian Alps whose crests may be seen clearly in the south. Not far from the banks are two islands; Fraueninsel and Herrninsel—a largely wooded island known for its famous palace, Herrenchiemsee built by King Ludwig, II, and reminiscent of the Versailles in France. The whole island was bought in 1873 by the young king who wished to save the trees and also build a sumptuous palace. The palace was designed and built to reflect his admiration of France’s Louis IV, known as the “Sun King.” Our overnight lodging will be in the village of Prien am Chiemsee. (B, D)

Day 10 (Thurs., May 27)   Munich

This morning we drive directly to Munich, capital of the state of Bavaria. We will arrive early enough in Munich to visit the Marienplatz, where we can view the famous Glockenspiel located on top of the New Town Hall. Visit the wonderful openair Viktualienmarkt fresh fruits and vegetables, along with traditional Bavarian specialties. Dinner and overnight in Munich. (B, D)

Day 11 (Fri., May 28)   Munich

We start our day with a morning sightseeing tour of Munich. We visit the Palace of Nymphenburg, former residence of King Ludwig, I of Bavaria, and summer home of Bavarian Sovereigns. Enjoy a special dinner Ratskeller, traditional Bavarian restaurant, located in the basement of the Rathaus (Town Hall). Overnight in Munich. (B, D)

Day 12 (Sat., May 29)   Home

Breakfast will be available at our hotel in Munich. We transfer from our hotel to the Munich Airport for our return flight, via Frankfurt, to the U.S. (B)
