To Use or Not to Use: Travel Agent 101 (Part 1) | ||||||||||
![]() | ||||||||||
Boy, how things can change in a generation or two! The Baby Boomer generation grew up using the services of a travel agent for all their travel needs. As recently as two decades ago there was no other way to shop for an airline ticket. But I dare say that many GenXer's and most GenMe members have never even talked with a professional travel consultant! So why should you? Work with a travel agent, that is. This two part series will deal with (1) the ways in which a travel professional could benefit you and (2) how to get the most from that relationship. The Search Particularly in the current travel market, shaped and driven by the challenging world economy, there is an even greater glut of information than normal. Deals abound; which one is right for you? With only a few focused questions the professional travel consultant can narrow that search considerably. I know, I know, the online search is "fun" for you. But are blurred details, confusing prices, and hours of your time really worth it? Why not allow the travel agent to make some targeted trip suggestions based on their years of expertise and you use your valuable time to choose between two or three possibilities customized especially for you, rather than sorting through the infinity of the Internet. The Booking Sure you can purchase anything online...we all know that. But did you know that in many cases a travel professional can offer reservation and purchasing benefits you can't get shopping on your own? Whether for a mission trip or a vacation trip, a travel agent (particularly an MTS TRAVEL consultant) can maximize your travel dollars, with extended payment periods, reduced deposits, extra luggage, and volume buying power. What have you got to lose? In most cases, quotes are without charge; and when it comes to making the purchase you have the power in deciding what the best use of your money and time is worth. The Trip Scenario #1:The flights were perfect, the room was upgraded, and the sun shone every day! The ultimate in a travel experience. Scenario #2: Now imagine the opposite. Perhaps, not such a big deal on a three day business trip to Los Angeles, but how about when in Zimbabwe with a group of twenty from your church, you are in charge, and the luggage is lost; or traveling with a dozen friends and family to Mexico for your daughter's wedding ceremony and upon arrival you find the hotel is overbooked. The advocacy of a travel agent is invaluable to help ensure Scenario #1, and to assist when Scenario #2 appears (admittedly, consistent sunshine is a challenge). Travel companies, such as MTS TRAVEL, have leveraged many years in the travel business into preferred relationships with airlines, ground operators, cruise lines, and more. Book with airline XYZ on their website, and you are just one passenger among many; book with MTS TRAVEL and you have been the airline's valued client for over 50 years. Tune in next month for Part 2! When we explore getting the most from your relationship with a travel professional.
