Raising Support - AIM's Successful Program
.

Africa Inland Mission's Director of Development, Rev. John Barney, has developed a winning formula for getting donors excited about the work the mission is doing in Kenya.

Development Case Study

Rev. John Barney, Director of Development, Africa Inland Mission

  What is Africa Inland Mission?

Africa Inland Mission (AIM) is a nondenominational Christian missionary sending agency serving primarily in Africa and the islands of the Indian Ocean. AIM was founded in 1895 and currently has more than 850 missionaries. To learn more about AIM, visit aim-us.org.

  Who is Rev. John Barney?

Rev. Barney is Director of Development for AIM, and has been with the mission for 49 years; 24 of those spent in East and Central Africa. He developed, and has led, 38 Kenya Safari and Mission Tours that have become a major contribution source to AIM's development efforts.

  What's the Program?
  • 14-day Kenya Safari and Mission Tours
  • Initially offered every four years, now twice per year
  • 50% mission and project visitations / 50% sightseeing
  • Promoted through quarterly magazine, receipt mailings, website, church visits and regional work

  •   Why do it?
  • Build relationships
  • Prayer support
  • Financial support
  • Tour participants "spread the word" when returning home
  • Help call people to service

  •   What are the results?
  • Significant financial support from tour participants each year
  • EIGHT tour participants have left their jobs to come to AIM
  • AIM fund-raising in 2002 was 2% above prior year, while most organizations were down considerably.

"If we can reach their heart, the pocketbook will follow." says Rev. Barney. "We never discuss money on a tour, but once people have seen our work first hand, they are compelled to give when they return from Africa. One traveller who claimed she `wasn't interested in missions' was broken while visiting a polio treatment facility. `That tour changed my life,' she said and she has contributed $10,000 to AIM every year since. Another early participant was so moved, he contributed $2 million to the mission over the course of his lifetime."

  •   What does Rev. Barney have to say about MTS TRAVEL?
  • "After 38 Safari and Mission Tours, I have never had a single complaint about MTS TRAVEL."
  • "Many tour operators have contacted me about handling my trips, but I have been so satisfied with MTS TRAVEL, I have never had a reason to change."
  • "Missionaries love to have groups visit them on the field, but they don't have time to make all the tour arrangements (and that is not why they were called.) We leave the travel details to the experts at MTS TRAVEL."
