Spotlight on... MTS TRAVEL Offices - Newton, Kansas
.

Fifty-one years ago, in 1955, an amazing thing occurred in the small community of Newton, Kansas (population approximately 18,000). Two ladies from the Mennonite Central Committee, began working as travel agents in an enclosed front porch of a small home, thus giving a whole new meaning to the term "storefront location."

Their purpose was to locate an office in a heavily populated Mennonite area and to assist making travel arrangements related to post-war relief and mission work. These projects were sponsored by the Mennonite Central Committee, as well as a host of other church denominations. Most of this travel was by ship, such as sending refugees from Europe to Paraguay.

Today, there are 14 employees, working in a beautiful office situated on a conspicuous corner on Main Street in Newton. Although MTS TRAVEL Newton is the only travel agency in town, and a well-known and popular community establishment, between 75 and 80 per cent of their loyal and diversified business literally originates from around the world, not from around the corner.

Byron Ediger, Travel Service Center Manager has worked for MTS TRAVEL for 37 years. And, believe it or not, one of their staff members, Janice Unruh has been working in this office for 42 years! The youngest staff member has been employed for 5 years.

MTS TRAVEL is proud to spotlight this office! Their history is unique and features a highly experienced team of International Travel Consultants. They are well-known and trusted by hundreds of veteran missionaries and humanitarian workers, and their organizations.

This group picture represents a combination of 285 years of travel experience.

When asked of Byron what his most memorable moments in the last 37 years would be, he replied:
1-In 1986 they purchased and moved in to their own building. He feels this was a major milestone for the company.
2-In the year 1997, Byron spent time in India pre-planning the Mennonite World Conference and had the special honor of meeting Mother Theresa.

MTS TRAVEL NEWTON is truly amazing. ….and they are available by phone at 800 835 0106 or email at Kansas@mtstravel.com to assist YOU! Congratulations, Newton, on your diligence and faithfulness.
