ITINERARY
Day 1: Sunday, June 4: Romantic Road to Rothenburg
This morning we leave Oberammergau and
travel the Romantic Road, Germany’s
best known and most popular route
for visitors traveling
through Germany’s Alpine region. Early afternoon
we arrive in Augsburg. Over 2000 years ago,
Augusta Vindelicorum was the capital of a mighty
province of the Roman Empire. In the -16th century
the Fugger family
brought the city to international
fame; they were
the richest trades-people
of their era, financing the
Emperor and the King.
Political decisions in
Augsburg affected the
world of that time. We
touch upon 2000 years of
glorious history, before
we continue on the
medieval tour of
Rothenburg.
To take a walk through this small place with its
timeless feel is to come face to face with vanished
centuries. Thanks to the painters and poets of the
Romantic age, Rothenburg became a symbol of
the Middle Ages in Germany. We overnight in
Rothenburg. Dinner is included in Rothenburg. (D)
Day 2: Monday, June 5: Romantic Road to Wuerzburg
Following our guided tour of Rothenburg this
morning we drive to Wuerzburg. This ancient
bishop city
lies in the
middle of the
Franconian
wine-growing
region. We
first visit
Wuerzburg’s
famous
landmark, the fortress Marienberg. Wuerzburgs
beauty is visable at a glance from the fortress, high
above the Main River. We overnight in Wuersburg.
Breakfast and dinner are included. (B,D)
Day 3: Tuesday, June 6: Wuerzburg
This morning we tour the town of Wuerzburg.
The many
churches and
the Romanesque
Cathedral
remind us
that
Wuerzburg
has been a religious center of the region for more
than 1200 years. The tour ends with a visit to the
Episcopal Residence, the “castle that surpasses
all castles,” created by Balthasar Neumann. The
world’s largest ceiling fresco over the stairway,
painted by Tiepolo, is also world-famous.
Later today we take a boat ride on Main River
for an excursion to Veitshoechheim, the summer
palace of Wuerzburg’s Prince Bishops, where we
can experience the famous Rococo garden, a
magnificent creation with lakes and waterworks.
We have a farewell dinner included tonight with our
overnight again in Wuerzburg. (B,D)
Day 4: Wednesday, June 7: Frankfurt Airport— Return flight home
Following breakfast we will be transferred to
Frankfurt Airport for our return flight home. (B)
